Behaviour can be controlled
Cats are quite common pets, despite the claim that “nobody has a cat” (Ellen Perry Berkeley). An estimated 34% of American homes are home to cats.
Although cats are renowned for their relative independence, humans and cats have coexisted for countless years.
In Cyprus, the jawbone of a cat that was almost 8000 years old was discovered. It is hypothesised that domestication of cats took place around 8000 years ago because it is improbable that anyone would have brought a wild cat on a boat. The discovery of a cat buried with a human 9500 years later, however, indicates that domestication may have begun far earlier than previously believed. Yet domestication is considered to have started nearly 12000 years ago in the Near East, which is much further back.
Cats were highly regarded in antiquity. Anyone found guilty of cat murder was subject to the death penalty. Cats were seen as a symbol of liberty by the ancient Romans. Yet, cats were considered to be associated with the devil and witches during the Middle Ages, serving as the witch’s familiar and other such things. It took the deaths of many people to defeat evil. Unfortunately, this was not a wise move, as some researchers believe that it contributed to the spread of the plague because the cats were not around to kill the plague-carrying rats.
